American Airlines Review. Flight Management & Travel Convenience in One App
The American Airlines app has some really great tools for frequent flyers and travelers who need to stay ahead of all their travel plans, from tracking baggage to being aware of changes, while adding an extra touch with entertainment on the go. Most are a disappointment though.
The design of both the iOS and Android app is intuitive and very sleek. The app provides sliding menus and a dynamic UI. The icons and tiles are neatly arranged, and there isn’t any hint of clutter on the screen. The mobile boarding pass is a real beauty. However, some links in the UI are broken, and they always loop you to the start page when you click on them.
Interface score: 8/10
The AA app offers convenient travel tools. Use a mobile boarding pass if you are in a real hurry and don’t want to print it along the way. AA can also send you all important notifications about your flight right on your iPod touch, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Android mobile device, ensuring you never miss a flight.
The interactive terminal maps will help you never get lost when making your way through the various airport terminals, and you can also get directions to the nearest Admirals Club Lounge. The app also allows you to make upgrades or changes to your flight seat within 4 hours of departure.
If you have an AAdvantage account, you can log in from the app, or you can simply create one right on your iOS or Google Android device. Other features include remote baggage tracking, in-flight entertainment, accessing AA Wi-Fi and making reservations. Quickly sync the app with your Apple Watch for easy access.
Both the IPA and APK are free, and there are no in-app purchases. The APK runs on Android 5.5 upwards, so it might not be an app for all Android devices. Apple devices require iOS 10.3 or later.
Features score: 7/10
While the app has a nice UI, some of the features don’t work. The in-app entertainment never loads, and I’ve tried to update and reinstall the app several times to no avail. The latest version of the app doesn’t have the Clear Expired Passes feature which was quite useful. You will experience a lot of connectivity problems with this app, even with good bandwidth. The other features such as seat change requests and the interactive terminal maps are always quite accurate.
User experience score: 6/10
The app offers frequent updates, although some of these never fix the problems. They have recently released a new upgrade compatible with iOS 10 which supports pictures and other cool features. On the Google Play app for flight management, I had a flight change that had been scheduled about 48 hours before I talked to a customer service agent, yet the app didn’t show the updated change.
I’ve definitely used better flight apps than this one, and this isn’t a leading app in my view due to an abundance of glitches. The app would be of great convenience if all the features worked, but unfortunately, most don’t. If you are going to use this app, prepare yourself for disappointment.
